Day 9 - Aubusson (Rest Day)

Sunday, May 25th, 2014

After the climbing and the head wind of yesterday, it was nice to have a rest day today. Unfortunately, being a Sunday, there wasn't too much open in the pretty little town of Aubusson.

We set off in search of one of the (many?) tapestry museums, but they all seemed to be closed, including the main one which said "open every day except Tuesdays".

We explored all of the attractions the town had to offer, including the "old bridge" near our hotel.

We walked along the river a couple of times.

And then up and down the main street checking for restaurant possibilities for Sunday evening. By this stage we had been informed that our hotel's (quality) restaurant was closed Sunday evenings, and most of the other (more down market) places were as well! We were getting desperate, but not yet panicking.

We visited the Tourist Office in search of other things to do, but it was "closed Sundays"!

The we saw a small tower up a steep pathway, and decided to go up for the view, if not the tower. It's quite a nice town, and very French (note the pitch of the roofs). However, there were a numner of unoccupied and/or dilapidated buildings, especially away from the more commercial areas.

Evidently, the tower is a clock tower, and nothing special in my opinion. There were also some terraced gardens, but they needed a lot of TLC.

What else was there to do but find a beer, and the only place to get one on a Sunday afternoon was our hotel. Despite a few drops of rain, we gathered in the courtyard "beer garden" and managed to pass another hour of our rest day.

By 6:00pm we were getting concerned about dinner options, so did another lap of the main street. The only options were a take away pizza place and a kebab place - and this is France! We returned to the hotel where, almost magically, someone had taken a business decision to open the hotel restaurant for the evening. We were 15, and another two couples came in off the street, so they did pretty well out of the night. A fine 29€ fixed menu it was too.
